takes 7 hours to defrag 18 files on a portable HD

Why is it taking 8 hours to only defrag 18 files on an "easystore" 5TB portable HD. 790 files on this HD is said to be fragmented. at this speed, it will take me months to defrag this HD. can I speed up the defrag speed?

Dear warren,

Thank you for posting your question on our forum.

The speed of the defragmentation process can be limited by the interface used to connect your portable storage. Also please check if none of the other programs are using the disk during the process.

To get the higher speed we recommend connecting the disk through the SATA interface.

If you have any other questions or need further help, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I use the the USB 3 to Micro B cable that comes with the portable HD. The Micro B connection is the only interface available on the portable HD. Is there a different cable or adapter I need to purchase? Defragging at this super slow speed is almost unbearable.... it will take months to defrag a 5tb HD.

Dear warren,

Thank you for your reply.

Portable HDDs consist of two components - case for the HDD disk and the disk itself. The HDD disk is connected to the case board with its own controller and a separate USB slot.

1. If the default speed of the HDD disk is slow, there is no way to increase it. This kind of HDDs usually work very quietly and spin slower.

2. The speed of the portable HDD also depends on the controller and USB interface. If the controller is old and the interface is slow, the only way to speed up the disk is to replace the HDD case with a new one.

3. If the HDD is slow by itself, unfortunately, a case with the higher speed will not be able to speed up the disk.

4. If you connect a portable HDD with the high speed to a slow slot (USB 2.0), the speed will not be increased.

Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
