There are a number of reasons that might cause an update problem, please follow the steps below in order to resolve it.

1. Downloading one or two gigabytes, especially over a wireless connection, might take a few hours if you are using a slower Internet connection. The speed may be further decelerated if Microsoft servers are overloaded with simultaneous download requests.

2. Another potential cause of the issue can be an outdated, nearly full hard disk drive (HDD). In such cases, we recommend performing regular defragmentation, data backup and reformatting.

3. Faulty Windows Update components.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter to fix certain problematic components and enable a quicker update.

4. You can also try the built-in troubleshooter to see whether it can fix the problem:

1) Start typing troubleshoot after pressing the Windows logo key on your keyboard. Pick Troubleshoot from the list of search results.

2) Click “Run the troubleshooter” after selecting Windows Update in the pop-up box. Permission will be requested from you. To launch the Windows Update troubleshooter, choose Yes.

3) To proceed, click Apply this repair.

4) To resolve this problem, adhere to the directions displayed on the screen.

Try installing a Windows update once again to see if it still takes a long time. Try the following solution if the problem still exists.

5. Update the drivers.

By visiting your PC manufacturer’s official website and looking for the most recent driver for each device on your computer, you may manually update your drivers.

Make sure the driver you select is appropriate for both your specific PC model and Windows version.

6. Reset the components of Windows Update.

Here’s how to go about it:

1) To enter the Run dialog, hit the Windows logo key and R simultaneously on your keyboard. To open Command Prompt as administrator, type cmd and simultaneously press Ctrl, Shift, and Enter. Permission will be requested from you. To launch Command Prompt, click Yes.

2) In Command Prompt, enter each of the following command lines as you type them by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard:

• net stop bits

• net stop wuauserv

• net stop appidsvc

• net stop cryptsvc

Following the execution of the above command lines, the system services connected to Windows Update will be shut down.

3) Type the following commands in the Command Prompt window (hit Enter after each one to complete it):

• ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

• ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old

After executing these two command lines, you will need to change the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders to SoftwareDistribution.old and catroot2.old, respectively. Windows Update stores temporary update files in these two directories.

Windows will put up new folders to house Windows update files if these two directories are renamed, to make it appear as though they are absent. This can help you prevent a lot of Windows Update problems brought on by the outdated, damaged temporary files in these two directories.

4) Hit Enter after typing each of the following command lines into the Command Prompt window:

• net start bits

• net start wuauserv

• net start appidsvc

• net start cryptsvc

You now re-launch the Windows Update-related system services by using the above command lines.

See whether the Windows Update issue has been repaired. And if not, attempt the following remedy, which is listed below.

7. Start the DISM utility.

1) To launch the Run dialog box on your keyboard, simultaneously hit the Windows Logo Key and Rat. To launch the Command Prompt as administrator, type cmd and simultaneously press the keys on your keyboard Ctrl, Shift, and Enter. Requests for approval will be made. To launch Command Prompt, choose Yes.

2) Press Enter after entering each of the command lines below on your keyboard.

• Clean-Up-Image / ScanHealth / Dism / Online

The DISM utility will scan every system file and compare it to the official system files when you run the command described above. This command line checks to determine if the system file on your computer is identical to its official source. The corruption is not resolved by this command line. This command procedure might take several minutes to complete.

• Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

The DISM tool will check to see whether your Windows 10 image has corruptions when you execute this command line. Additionally, this command line does not fix the damaged files. This command procedure might take several minutes to complete.

• Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

The latter command line instructs the DISM utility to attempt to fix any detected corrupted files. The corrupted files will be replaced with those from an online authoritative source. This command procedure might take several minutes to complete.

3) After the restoration procedure has been finished, close Command Prompt.

To test if this repair works, try installing a Windows update. Try running the System File Checker to see whether the problem still exists.

8. Start System File Checker.

1) To enter the Run dialog, simultaneously hit the Windows Logo Key and R on your keyboard. To launch Command Prompt as administrator, type cmd and press Ctrl, Shift, and Enter simultaneously. You’ll be asked for your consent. To access Command Prompt, choose Yes.

2) Type the following command into your keyboard and hit Enter:

• sfc /scannow

The command procedure can take some time to complete.

3) Close Command Prompt when this command operation is finished.

Check if the issue is fixed. In case the problem remains, try the following solution.

9. Programs might clash with Windows Update

When attempting to update Windows, third-party drivers, services, and apps that start when Windows starts may result in software conflicts. If your computer has a fast solid state drive (SSD) and a fast wired internet connection, but the update is still taking a lengthy time, you can perform Windows 10 clean boot before trying the update.

1.Right-click the Start button.

2.Click Search.

3.Type msconfig and hit Enter on your keyboard.

4.Click Services.

5.Click the checkbox next to Hide all Microsoft services.

6.Click Disable all.

7.Click Startup.

8.Click Open Task Manager.

9.Click any startup program you suspect might be interfering.

10.Click Disable. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for all startup programs.

11.Click the X to close Task Manager.

12.Click OK in the System Configuration window.

13.Restart your PC.

Try again installing the Windows 10 update when your computer has restarted. Repeat the process, but click Enable All in Step 6 and Enable in Step 10 to enable startup items once more.
