Please see the necessary requirements for Hyper-V:

• 64-bit versions of Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education;

• Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), which is available in the current generation of 64-bit Intel and AMD CPUs;

• VM Monitor Mode Extension (VT-x on Intel CPUs) CPU support;

• A minimum of 4 GB of RAM.

On a host with 4GB of RAM, you can operate 3 or 4 basic virtual machines, but additional virtual machines will require more resources. In the opposite direction, depending on your real hardware, you can also build big virtual computers with 32 CPUs and 512GB RAM.

Because virtual machines and the Hyper-V host share memory, you must supply enough memory to support the anticipated virtual workload.

In order to use the system, the following components must be activated in the BIOS:

• Virtualization Technology (may be labeled differently depending on the motherboard manufacturer)

• Hardware Enforced Data Execution Prevention.

After confirming the above operating system and hardware requirements, check Windows’ hardware compatibility:

• use PowerShell or a command prompt (cmd.exe)

• enter systeminfo => check the Hyper-V Requirements section

• every value for the Hyper-V requirements needs to be YES (if any of the items is listed as NO, make the appropriate adjustments)

To finalize the compatibility checkup, go to Control Pane => Windows features on or off and see if you have Hyper-V there, with 2 options:

If you see Windows Hypervisor Platform instead of Hyper-V, your system might not be Hyper-V compatible and you need to double-check the requirements listed above.

If you run systeminfo on an existing Hyper-V host, the Hyper-V Requirements section will show:

Hyper-V Requirements: A hypervisor has been detected. Features required for Hyper-V will not be displayed.

You can enable Hyper-V using the Windows 10 control panel, PowerShell, or using the Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management tool (DISM).

1. To enable Hyper-V via PowerShell:

• open a PowerShell as Administrator.

• run the following command:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All

• if the command couldn’t be found, make sure you’re running PowerShell as Administrator.

• reboot once the installation has finished.

2. To enable the Hyper-V using DISM:

• open PowerShell or CMD as Administrator.

• type the following command:

DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /All /FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V

3. Activate the Hyper-V role in Settings:

• right click on the Windows button and select ‘Apps and Features’

• locate “Programs and Features” on the right under related settings

• select Turn Windows Features on or off

• select Hyper-V and click OK

• restart the system once the installation is complete.
