Windows 10 CD Drive not working but showing as "working properly"

1. Restart the WMI service:

- press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter;

- find Windows Management Instrumentation in the list;

- right-click it, select Properties, and set the Startup type to Automatic;

- click Start if the service is not running, then click OK.

2. Rebuild the WMI repository:

- open Command Prompt as an administrator;

- run the following commands one by one:

net stop winmgmt

winmgmt /resetrepository

net start winmgmt

3. Update or reinstall the driver:

- open Device Manager (Win + X => Device Manager);

- expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click your CD drive, and select Update driver;

- if updating doesn’t work, right-click and select Uninstall device => restart your computer, Windows should reinstall the driver automatically

4. Check for IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers:

- in Device Manager, click View => Show hidden devices;

- expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. If they are missing, it might indicate a driver issue.

- try uninstalling any hidden drivers and then restarting your computer.

5. Registry fix:

- press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter;

- navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0;

- right-click in the right pane, select New => DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it EnumDevice1;

- double-click EnumDevice1, set the value to 1, and click OK;

- restart your computer.

6. General troubleshooting steps.

Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter:

- go to Settings => Update & Security => Troubleshoot => Hardware and Devices;

- click Run the troubleshooter and follow the instructions.

Check BIOS Settings:

- restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, Del, or Esc during startup);

- ensure that the CD/DVD drive is recognized and properly configured.

Hi, I have tried all the above. None of them have resolved the issue :-( There were no IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers shown in device manager. I have downloaded the legacy controllers and restarted several times but it just says cannot run error 31

1. Install chipset drivers as their absence might cause issues with IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers:

- visit your computer or motherboard manufacturer's website and download the latest chipset drivers;

- install them and restart your computer.

2. Re-enable DVD/CD-ROM drives or USB ports:

- open Device Manager;

- expand DVD/CD-ROM drives or Universal Serial Bus controllers;

- right-click on the device and select Enable device if it is disabled.

3. Uninstall problematic Windows updates:

- go to Settings => Update & Security => Windows Update;

- click on View update history and then Uninstall updates.

- look for recent updates that might have caused the issue and uninstall them.

4. Check SATA cable and port:

- ensure that the SATA cable connecting your hard drive to the motherboard is securely connected;

- try using a different SATA port on the motherboard.

5. Update BIOS:

- check your motherboard manufacturer's website for any BIOS updates.
