Hello,

Thank you for posting your question on our forum.

If most of your hard drive space is still occupied after a thorough cleanup and you rapidly lose gigabytes of storage, please try these steps to identify and resolve the issue:

1) Use Windows Disk Cleanup with System Files

- Run the built-in Disk Cleanup tool (Press the Windows key + R, type cleanmgr, and press Enter)

- Make sure to click “Clean up system files” to include temporary Windows installation files, update cleanup, error memory dumps, and other system files that take up space.

2) Use Auslogics BoostSpeed 14

3) Empty the Recycle Bin

- Files in the Recycle Bin still occupy space; empty it fully.

4) Uninstall Unnecessary Programs

- Remove applications you no longer use, which can free significant disk space.

5) Enable Storage Sense (Go to Windows Settings -> System -> Storage)

- Storage Sense automatically cleans temporary files and content from the Downloads folder and Recycle Bin. Configure it to run regularly.

6) Check for Hidden or Large Files Consuming Space

- Use tools like WinDirStat or TreeSize to analyze which folders or files are consuming the most space, including hidden system or user files.

7) Manage System Restore Points

- System restore points can use large amounts of disk space. Consider reducing space allocated or deleting old restore points.

8) Disable Hibernation

- The hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) can be very large. Disabling hibernation removes this file and frees up space.

9) Scan for Malware

- Some malware can consume disk space rapidly by creating files or logs. Scan with tools like Malwarebytes or Auslogics Anti-Malware.

10) Check for Disk Errors and Fragmentation

- Use CHKDSK to find and fix disk errors, and defragment your hard drive if it is an HDD to improve efficiency.

- Type "cmd" in the Windows search bar, right-click on "Command Prompt," and select "Run as administrator"

- Type chkdsk followed by the drive letter you want to check (e.g., chkdsk C: for the C drive)

11) Consider Hardware Upgrades if Needed

- If you consistently run out of space, upgrading to a larger or additional hard drive or SSD may be necessary.

If after these steps the disk space issue persists and you notice rapid loss of GBs quickly, it may indicate:

- A hidden process or application generating large temporary files or caches.

- Malware infection.

- System settings such as pagefile size or restore points being extremely large.

Use disk space analysis tools to precisely identify what is consuming space. Also, verify that no syncing services (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive) are duplicating files locally.
