First of all we recommend checking your hard drive, if there are any errors, the system will prompt you how to fix them.

1. Press Start => type cmd into the search bar.

2. Right-click the found command and select “Run as administrator”.

3. Execute the SFC /scannow command => Enter.

Disable unneeded automatic programs updates.

Updates can be downloaded automatically, but might need manual installation or something is preventing automatic installation. By scanning and clearing these files will be deleted as unused and redownloaded on next boot.

After scan and clean up in BoostSpeed, check the program’s reports to see what files have been deleted (it will give you an idea on what is occupying free space).

You can also use Windows built-in utilities to free up more space.

1. Run Disk Cleanup.

1.1. Start => All apps => Administrative tools => Disk Cleanup.

1.2. On the Disk Cleanup tab remove all temporary files.

1.2. On the Additional tab you can also remove all restore points, except for the last one.

2. Disable restore points creation option or reduce used disk space.

2.1. Start => Control panel => System and Security => System.

2.2. Click on the System protection link and press Configure.

2.3. Disable System protection or reduce used disk space.

3. Disable Hibernation mode.

3.1. Run command line as Administrator.

3.2. Type cmd into the Start search box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter simultaneously.

3.3. Enter the powercfg /h off command, press Enter.

4. Change the swap file size.

4.1. Start => Control panel => System and Security => System.

4.2. Click on the Advanced system settings => Advanced => Performance => Settings => Advanced => Change.

5. Clean the C:\Windows\rescache cache folder.

6. Clean up temporary files (quarantine) used by your security software, in some it is worth disabling tracing.

You can disable the Search service as well, as the size of Windows.edb index database file (contains ​​Windows Search index database) is constantly growing. The search index allows faster search of files and data on the disk in the index database of files, emails in the pst files and other content. The more files you have, the bigger Windows.edb file becomes (sometimes it can take out all of your disk space). It is usually hidden and stored in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\ catalog.

To find out the current size of the Windows.edb file, use the following command in PowerShell:

((Get-Item $env:programdata'\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb').length/1GB)

If you are running out of disk space, you can delete the Windows.edb file (no files will be lost, you will simply reset the search index).

For this, execute the following commands:

net stop "Windows Search"

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search" /v SetupCompletedSuccessfully /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

del %PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb

net start "Windows Search"

The SetupCompletedSuccessfully = 0 registry value in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search path will reset current Windows Search settings and indexing paths on the next boot, recover basic settings wsearch and default indexing paths. Upon system restart, Windows Search service will start the process of reindexing data on the computer disks and recreate the Windows.edb file (system might slow down in the process).
